Goal setting bulletin boards are a wonderful way to help your students think about what they want to accomplish throughout the school year. A colorful display gives you a dedicated space where students can see their goals and be reminded of the progress they are making. See student progress bulletin boards here.
You can make your goal setting bulletin boards interactive by giving each student a space to write or display a personal goal. Students might choose an academic goal, a reading goal, a writing goal, a math goal, or even a classroom behavior goal. Have them write their goal on a star, pencil, balloon, lightbulb, or another themed cutout and add their name. This gives every student ownership of the display while making the bulletin board meaningful rather than simply decorative.
A goal setting bulletin board can also help you teach students that reaching a goal takes time and effort. Instead of only displaying the final goal, encourage students to think about the smaller steps they need to take to get there. You could add sections for “My Goal,” “My Steps,” “My Progress,” and “I Did It!” As students make progress, they can move their name or goal marker across the board. This creates a visual reminder that even small improvements are worth celebrating.

Goal Setting Bulletin Boards
You can create a board around themes such as “Reach for Your Goals,” “Dream Big,” or “Set Your Goals and Shine.” Choose a design that fits your classroom theme and makes the display inviting for your students. See examples of goal setting bulletin boards in different themes below.
Racing toward Our Goals Racer bulletin board: A teacher created this bulletin board from scratch using this road paper strip, race car cutouts and construction cutouts.
Pac-Man bulletin board: This bulletin board has the heading “Chase Your Goals, It’s an a-maze-ing school year”.
“Let’s Tackle Our Goals” goal setting bulletin board: This football themed bulletin board set is a fantastic addition to any classroom, especially if you teach a lot of students who love sports.
‘We Tackle Our Goals‘ bulletin board: Represent both Fall and football with this bulletin board set. The second board was created from this set.
‘Together We Can Move Mountains’ Goal setting Attendance bulletin board: This attendance bulletin board is so beautiful with cutouts for monthy goals.
‘Our Reward is… Our Goal is…’ poster bullletin board: You can write the goal your students are working toward and easily wipe it off this poster set.
Consider changing or updating the goals throughout the year so the bulletin board continues to feel fresh and useful. At the beginning of a new grading period, give students an opportunity to reflect on their previous goals and choose something new to work toward. You can also have students add short reflections about what helped them succeed or what they would like to improve. This turns your bulletin board into an ongoing classroom activity that supports reflection, motivation, and a growth mindset.
Most importantly, use your goal setting bulletin board to celebrate effort as well as achievement. Some students may reach their goals quickly, while others may need more time and encouragement. Recognize perseverance, progress, and trying something new so every student can feel successful. With a thoughtful goal setting display, you can create a positive classroom environment where students learn to dream big, make a plan, keep working, and feel proud of how far they have come.
SMART Goals Bulletin Board Ideas
To me, SMART Goals bulletin boards are the best types of goal setting bulletin boards because they help students understand how to set goals that are clear and achievable. Create a colorful display featuring the five parts of a SMART goal: Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Relevant, and Time Bound. You can give each letter its own section of the bulletin board and include simple explanations or examples that are easy for elementary students to understand. A heading such as “Set SMART Goals!” or “Make Your Goals SMART” can make the display both educational and eye catching.
Make your SMART Goals bulletin board interactive by giving each student a space to create a personal goal. Provide goal cards, stars, pencils, or speech bubbles where students can write their goal and explain how it meets each part of the SMART framework. For example, instead of saying “I want to get better at reading,” a student could write a more specific goal such as “I will read for 15 minutes every day.” Students can add their goals to the bulletin board and update them as they make progress.
You can also use your SMART Goals bulletin boards throughout the school year to encourage reflection and celebrate progress. Students can move their goal markers as they complete each step or add a small reflection when they achieve their goal. This gives you an easy way to revisit goal setting during the year while encouraging students to take responsibility for their learning and celebrate the progress they make.
